Using a router to share your internet connection.

Using a router has the advantage of not needing the have a server/gateway running 24/7,  most routers also have a built in firewall for the more common ports, it is however still advisable to run a separate firewall such as one of these .

In this next section I have used the Netgear RT 314 as it seems to be the most popular, the settings on your client machines may vary slightly with a different brand. For more detailed information on the RT 314 go to the link page.

What you need for this type of sharing are the router, one NIC per PC and some straight through Cat5 patch leads.

Connect the Modem into the uplink port of the RT 314, then from there connect your PC/PC's, and then follow the steps below.

Choose your operating system and configure your client/s. 98/ME, W2K, XP

Ping Router

Open a Dos/Command Prompt and type ping 192.168.0.1 (being the default IP for your router), if all is correct, you should see 0% packet loss in the reply from the ping command, as shown in the pic, then click next.

If you get an error, go back to the beginning and check all your connections & settings.
